"Looking Around Me"

Has this little column expressed any real "passion" in the past five years? I admit it — I use the brakes when it comes to writing with passion! How many of you would sit still for even a miniature rant by this editor? Would you give the sort of permission to "be outspoken" requested recently by the wife of a certain President Hopeful! Somehow I doubt it! But here comes a bit of "rah-rah-rah" as we lift high the torch for the amazing Mennonite Senior Sports Classic! This biannual event did occur mid-June in the Shenandoah Valley — twice there and twice before at Goshen College. I will let others shout. (See photos and final tallies on the Web site: http://marp.mennonite.net)
Listen to the following heart-felt "testimony" sent to me by Jonas Coblentz (father of Rosella Hernley) who competed and received medals in predicted time walk, horseshoes, home run derby, basketball throw, shuffleboard, golf and cycling — 10K, 20K and 2K Sprint.
Note a "wild idea" (page 2) sent by Evan Oswald all the way from Glendale, Arizona. These two health enthusiasts qualify as "septuagenarians" — love that word! — so have age and wisdom and "the fire in the belly" to push for a future for MSSC.

JONAS: "On June 16th the people started to come from the East, West, North and South. Some were friends from years past and some were new people that soon turned into friends as well. The time went quickly as there was a lot to do in two and a half days. The joy of seeing people of all ages from 50 to 80+ doing so many [sports competitions] — and enjoying it all — was so inspiring. The Love of Life we have in Christ Jesus is what this is all about. We all want to stay active as long as we have good health, and this is what helps us to stay focused. We had our daughter and son-in-law with us this year for two generations of family fun and wellness activities. I want to urge all to look for the time in two years to get involved because there is something for everyone — even just walking, which is very important to all. Thanks to the hosts [Eastern Mennonite University and VMRC, the retirement community adjoining the campus] and to MARP for all the hard work that it takes to have something of this nature. Thank you and God bless."
